Lebanon has 5.38 million internet users, about 91.8% of the population, according to DataReportal's Digital 2026 report. Almost all of them search on Google, which held 93.99% of the country's search market in August 2026, per StatCounter. So the demand is there. The hard part is getting those searches to land on your website instead of stopping on the results page.
That has become harder in the past two years. Google now answers many questions itself with AI Overviews, and a growing share of people skip search entirely and ask ChatGPT. This guide explains what still works for Lebanese businesses in classic SEO (search engine optimization) and in AIO (AI optimization, sometimes called GEO or generative engine optimization), with steps you can start this week.
Fewer Clicks per Search, Same Number of Buyers
In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click to any website, according to SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data. In 2019 that figure was 49%. A field study by researchers at the Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University, covered by Search Engine Journal, found that AI Overviews cut outbound organic clicks by 38% on the queries where they appeared.
These numbers come from the US, and no comparable study exists for Lebanon yet. But the direction is global. The takeaway is not that SEO is dead. It is that ranking alone is no longer enough: you also need to be the source that Google's AI and ChatGPT quote, name, and link to when they answer.
Meanwhile, AI assistants have become a search channel of their own. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026. When someone in Beirut asks it for "the best accounting firm for startups in Lebanon," the answer is built from pages the model can find and trust. If your business is not on those pages, you are not in the answer.
Start With What Google Actually Asks For
A lot of paid advice sells AIO as a brand new discipline. Google Search Central says otherwise. Its official guidance states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." A page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google also says you do not need special AI text files or new markup.
In practice, that means the basics carry more weight than ever. Here is the foundation every Lebanese business website should have in place:
Verify your site in Google Search Console. It is free and shows which searches bring people to your site, which pages are indexed, and which have errors. Check it monthly.
Do not block crawlers by accident. Review your robots.txt file and make sure your key pages are not set to "noindex". Many sites built quickly by agencies ship with these mistakes.
Build for phones and weak connections. DataReportal puts Lebanon's median mobile download speed at 43.90 Mbps against just 16.13 Mbps on fixed lines. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and autoplay videos, and test your pages on a phone using mobile data.
Keep important content in text. Menus, prices, and service lists posted only as images or PDFs are hard for search engines and AI tools to read. Put them on the page as text.
Link your own pages together. Every service page should be reachable from your homepage within two or three clicks, with clear link text like "corporate tax services" instead of "click here".
Local Search: The Google Business Profile Problem in Beirut
For shops, clinics, restaurants, and service firms, the fastest win is usually a complete Google Business Profile. It feeds the map results and is one of the data sources Google names in its guidance for AI features. Add accurate hours, categories, photos, a phone number that gets answered, and a link to your website.
Lebanon adds a twist. Many addresses are informal and built around landmarks, so the same business often appears online with three different addresses. Pick one version, including the building name and a nearby landmark, and use it everywhere: your website, your profile, social pages, and directories. Consistency helps search engines and AI models understand that all these mentions refer to the same company.
Reviews matter too. Ask happy customers for a Google review right after a good experience, and reply to every review, including the bad ones. Replies show real activity and give search engines more text about what you do.
Writing Pages That AI Tools Want to Quote
The best research on this comes from a 2024 paper by researchers at Princeton University and partners, presented at the KDD 2024 conference. It found that optimizing content for generative engines could boost visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, and that results vary by industry. Across that research and Google's own advice, a few habits stand out:
Answer the question in the first two sentences. If your page is titled "How much does company registration cost in Lebanon," state the range and what drives it right away, then explain the details below.
Use real numbers and name your sources. Pages with specific figures, dates, and cited sources are easier for AI tools to trust and quote than vague marketing copy.
Write for the questions people type. Search Console and the "People also ask" box in Google show the exact phrasing Lebanese users search with. Build pages and FAQ sections around those questions.
Show who is behind the content. Add author names, credentials, and an About page with your team, license, and physical address. Anonymous pages are weaker sources.
Keep pages updated. Prices, regulations, and exchange-related details change often in Lebanon. An outdated page loses trust with readers and search engines alike.
Language is an opportunity many local brands miss. A large share of Lebanese content online is in English or French only, while plenty of searches happen in Arabic. If your customers search in Arabic, a well written Arabic version of your key pages can face far less competition. Build it as a real translation on its own URL, not an automatic widget.
Why Other Sites Talking About You Matters More Now
Links from other websites have always been a ranking signal for Google. In AI search, being mentioned may matter even more than being linked. An Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, published in December 2025, found that brand mentions across the web had a strong correlation (0.66 to 0.71) with how often brands appeared in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Mentions on YouTube showed the strongest link of all, around 0.737. Raw backlink counts and the number of pages on a site showed much weaker relationships.
Correlation is not proof of cause, and Ahrefs says as much. Still, the pattern makes sense. AI models learn which companies matter in a field by seeing them named, described, and recommended across many trusted sources. A BrightLocal study of 800 local business searches found that ChatGPT drew 58% of its sources from business websites, 27% from third-party mentions, and 15% from directories. It also found ChatGPT Search relies mainly on Bing's index, which is why it is worth submitting your site to Bing Webmaster Tools too, even though Bing holds only 4.2% of Lebanon's search market.
For a Lebanese business, this points to a clear plan: get your company named on credible, relevant websites. Industry directories, chambers of commerce, partner websites, podcasts, YouTube interviews, and local business media all count. Each mention is another place where people, search engines, and AI tools can learn who you are and what you do.
Getting Listed and Linked on LeBusiness
LeBusiness covers Lebanese companies, founders, funding, and markets, and it runs a public companies directory alongside its news coverage. Any Lebanese company can get listed for a one-time fee of $25, with no renewals. Your profile gives your business a page on a Lebanon-focused business publication, with your description, details, and a link back to your website. That means one more consistent, indexable mention of your company in exactly the context AI tools look at when someone asks about businesses in Lebanon.
Companies that want more than a listing can book a sponsored feature through the LeBusiness advertising page. Higher packages place your story as a top story on the site and in the newsletter, and the article, listing, and backlink to your website stay live permanently after the featured period ends. The value is in referral traffic, lasting coverage that search engines can index, and your brand being described in detail on a trusted local source. Real news, like a funding round, a launch, or a new hire, can also be sent to the LeBusiness newsroom through the contact page for editorial consideration.
A 30-Day Starting Plan
Week 1: Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Fix indexing errors and check your robots.txt.
Week 2: Complete your Google Business Profile, settle on one address format, and update it everywhere.
Week 3: Rewrite your five most important pages so each one answers a real customer question in its first two sentences, with numbers and sources.
Week 4: Get your company listed on LeBusiness and at least two other relevant directories, and pitch one story or interview to a local outlet or podcast.
None of this requires a big budget. It requires consistency, and most Lebanese competitors have not done it yet. Test the result yourself: in a month, ask ChatGPT and Google who the best companies in your category in Lebanon are, and check whether your name comes up.
