Lebanon placed 72nd out of 98 countries in the AI-Human Skills Synergy Index, part of the 2026 edition of the Coursera Global Skills Report. Among Arab countries, it came 11th. The result puts Lebanon near the bottom of the "Emerging" group, which covers ranks 51 to 75.

Titled "Global Skills Report: The AI-Human Skills Advantage," the report is now in its eighth edition. For the first time, it pulls learning data from two platforms, Coursera and Udemy, which together count more than 300 million registered learners. Coursera describes it as the broadest dataset in the report's history.

    How the Index Scores Countries

The index measures whether learners in a country are building AI skills alongside the human skills needed to use them well, such as critical thinking, complex problem-solving and ethics. Sixty percent of the score comes from Coursera learning behavior: how proficient learners are, how widely they enroll, and how much their AI and human skills courses overlap. The other 40% comes from Oxford Insights' Government AI Readiness Index 2025, which looks at government capacity, policy and technology readiness.

Countries are then sorted into four groups. Ranks 1 to 25 are "Leading," 26 to 50 are "Competitive," 51 to 75 are "Emerging," and 76 to 98 are "Lagging."

Ten Arab Countries Finished Ahead of Lebanon

The United Arab Emirates was the top Arab performer, ranking 6th in the world. Saudi Arabia followed at 25th, the last spot in the Leading group. Egypt (43rd), Qatar (46th) and Bahrain (48th) all landed in the Competitive tier.

According to the report, Lebanon's 72nd place reflects modest performance in combining AI capabilities with complementary human skills. Only three ranks separate it from the Lagging tier, which starts at 76th.

    Germany Tops a Europe-Heavy Leaderboard

Germany ranked first globally, followed by France, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong. Europe performed strongly as a region, with 25 of its 31 countries placed in the upper half of the index.

    45 GenAI Enrollments Every Minute

Learners are now signing up for Generative AI courses at a rate of 45 enrollments per minute, up from 25 per minute in 2025. Coursera and Udemy have responded by growing their GenAI catalogs to around 10,000 courses in 2026.

Some AI topics grew far faster than others. Enrollments in AI security jumped 665% year on year, Agentic Workflows rose 546%, and Generative AI climbed 132%. AI micro-credential enrollments grew 122%, overall AI enrollments 67%, and micro-credentials in general 33%.

Human skills are rising too. Enrollments in complex problem-solving courses increased 126%, critical thinking 107%, and innovation 74%.

Companies Are Adopting AI Faster Than They Train Staff

Nearly three in four organizations have deployed AI or are piloting it, the report found. Yet only 18% say most of their workforce took part in AI reskilling or upskilling over the past year.

Research from Deloitte cited in the report shows the same gap. Of the business leaders surveyed, 43% said their organizations were "highly prepared" on technology infrastructure, but only 20% said the same about their workforce.
