Alphabet has agreed to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic , the maker of the Claude family of AI models, combining a $10 billion cash payment now with up to $30 billion more tied to performance milestones. Google Cloud will also deliver an additional 5 gigawatts of compute capacity to Anthropic over five years. The cash component values Anthropic at $350 billion, matching the level set in a February 2026 funding round. The deal was announced on April 24 and first reported by Bloomberg before being confirmed by Anthropic. How the $40 Billion Breaks Down Four days earlier, Amazon agreed to put up to $25 billion more into Anthropic, including $5 billion in immediate cash and up to $20 billion linked to commercial milestones. As part of that arrangement, Anthropic committed to spend up to $100 billion with Amazon Web Services to secure roughly 5 gigawatts of compute over time, training and running Claude on Trainium chips. Anthropic's growth has moved fast enough to justify the spending. The company reported annualized revenue above $30 billion this month, up from about $9 billion at the end of 2025. With two of its largest cloud providers also serving as its largest investors, what has emerged is closer to a vertically integrated AI utility than a pure software business. What Google Gets in Return Google runs its own frontier model in Gemini and recently released the cybersecurity-focused Mythos system, so financing a direct rival looks competitive on paper. The strategic logic sits one layer down. By backing Anthropic and selling it five gigawatts of cloud capacity, Google locks in a long-term tenant for its TPU stack and keeps a foot inside the dominant rival to OpenAI. For Anthropic, multi-cloud financing reduces dependence on any single provider. For Google, the structure spreads exposure across cash, equity and contracted compute revenue.
